Bintan from Singapore: the beach crossing, and why a day trip is the wrong length

Bintan is 40 kilometres east of Singapore — twice as far as Batam — and it is nearly three times Singapore's land area at 1,467.84 km², with about 420,000 residents spread across it.

Those two numbers set up the whole page. It is far enough that the crossing takes real time, and big enough that where you land determines what kind of trip you have.

The honest advice first: do not do it as a day trip

You can. People do. It is usually a mistake.

Between the crossing in each direction, immigration at both ends, and the transfer from the terminal to wherever you are actually going, a same-day return leaves you a few hours somewhere. For an island whose main product is a beach resort, a few hours is not enough to justify the effort or the fare.

Bintan works as one or two nights. The resorts on the northern coast are priced and organised around that, and the difference between an exhausting day and a genuinely restful two nights is a single hotel booking.

If what you want is a day out of Singapore, cross to Batam instead. It is half the distance, it is a working city rather than a resort coast, and it works at day-trip length. That is the correct division between the two crossings, and getting it right is worth more than any ticket advice on this page.

Two arrival points, two different islands

Bandar Bentan Telani exists to serve Bintan Beach International Resort, which covers the entire north of the island in the Teluk Sebong district. Resort transfers meet the ferry. This is the crossing almost every package uses.

Tanjung Pinang is a separate autonomous city and the island's commercial centre. It is cheaper to reach, considerably busier, and nothing like a resort arrival. It is the right terminal if you want markets, temples, food at local prices and access to Trikora Beach on the east coast.

Booking the wrong one is the classic Bintan error, and the two terminals are a long drive apart.

What is actually on the island

The resort coast at Lagoi — beaches, golf, spas, and the standard resort apparatus. This is the reason most people cross, and it is well executed.

The Blue Lake and the Mini Desert — Bintan's most photographed inland sights are old bauxite workings. The quarries have flooded into intensely coloured lakes and the tailings have weathered into pale open ground that reads as desert in photographs. They are industrial leftovers rather than natural wonders, which is worth knowing before you build a day around them, and they are genuinely striking.

Trikora Beach on the east coast — quieter and less developed than the northern resort strip.

Tanjung Pinang — markets, temples, and the ordinary business of a city of a few hundred thousand people.

Mangroves — river tours in the north, usually run at dusk.

The practical rules

Passport required. International crossing into Indonesia. Check the visa and entry rules for your nationality before booking.

Bintan is UTC+7, an hour behind Singapore. Ferry schedules are in local time at each end. Work out your return twice and then once more.

Ferries are weather-dependent. The northeast monsoon between roughly November and March produces rougher crossings and occasional cancellations. Do not schedule a tight onward flight against a Bintan return in that window.

Book the return leg with slack. The last sailings fill, and the consequence of missing one is a night in Indonesia you did not plan.

Timing

Weekdays over weekends. The resort coast is a weekend destination for Singapore, and both fares and occupancy reflect that.

Avoid the monsoon months for the sea, roughly November to March, if a smooth crossing matters to you.

Two nights beats one. With one night you spend most of both days moving. With two you get a genuine day on the island.

Cross early. Whatever the length of the trip, an early sailing is worth more than a late one, because the transfer at the far end is longer than people expect.

How to save

Book Tanjung Pinang rather than Bandar Bentan Telani if you are not going to a resort. It is the cheaper crossing, and the resort route's fare reflects the transfer infrastructure behind it.

Book the round trip. Round-trip fares are the standard product and cheaper than two singles.

Eat outside the resort strip. Prices inside the Lagoi resorts are resort prices; prices in Tanjung Pinang and the villages are Indonesian prices, and the gap is large.

Carry rupiah. Resorts take cards and Singapore dollars, everywhere else prefers rupiah at a much better rate.

Reconsider Batam if this is a day trip. Half the distance, half the crossing, and it works at that length.

How to get there

Tanah Merah Ferry Terminal, 50 Tanah Merah Ferry Road, reached from Tanah Merah MRT (EW4/CG) plus a short bus or taxi, is the usual departure point for Bintan.

Treat it like a short-haul flight: arrive early, because you clear Singapore immigration on the way out and the terminal gets busy on weekend mornings.

What is nearby

On the Singapore side, Tanah Merah puts you close to Changi, so a Bintan return pairs naturally with Jewel Changi Airport or Wild Wild Wet at Pasir Ris on the way back.

For the other ways out of Singapore: Batam is the shorter Indonesian crossing, LEGOLAND Malaysia is over the causeway to the north, and the Southern Islands are the version that needs no passport at all.
