Singapore Zoo tickets: prices, the tram question, and when to go

Singapore Zoo opened on 27 June 1973 with 270 animals and a then-radical premise: no bars. Animals are separated from visitors by moats, dry ditches, glass and planting, so that almost every enclosure reads as landscape rather than cage. Fifty years later that approach is standard practice at good zoos worldwide, and this is still one of the places that does it best.

It sits on 28 hectares beside Upper Seletar Reservoir, holds around 315 species — roughly one in six of them threatened — and forms one part of the five-park Mandai Wildlife Reserve, which between them care for more than 15,000 animals.

What is actually inside

Eleven zones, arranged around a central loop that the tram follows:

• Orangutan Island and the Boardwalk — the single reason to come. This is the largest captive colony of orangutans in the world, on free-ranging island habitats with animals moving overhead on ropes. Go here first, before the crowd.
• Fragile Forest — a walk-through biodome where lemurs, sloths, fruit bats and butterflies share the path with you. No barrier. It is the most memorable ten minutes in the park for most children.
• Wild Africa — zebra, giraffe, white rhino, cheetah, across the largest open sightlines in the zoo.
• Australasia — a walk-through kangaroo yard.
• Great Rift Valley of Ethiopia — hamadryas baboons in a large multi-level cliff enclosure.
• RepTopia and Reptile Kingdom — indoor, air-conditioned, and therefore the correct move at 1pm.
• KidzWorld — a wet play area with a carousel. Bring a towel and a change of clothes if you have young children; they will use it.

Animal presentations run to a daily timetable posted at the entrance. Splash Safari (sea lions) and the Rainforest Fights Back show are the two most attended — arrive 15 minutes early or stand at the back.

Timing is everything

Mandai's heat is the constraint, not the crowd. Plan around temperature and the animals will follow.

8.30am to 10.30am is the whole game. Gates open at 8.30, the animals are active, the walkways are shaded by the eastern treeline and the tram runs empty. Every hour you delay costs you both comfort and wildlife.

Midday to 2pm is the worst window. Large mammals sleep in shade, humidity peaks and you will spend the hour looking for air conditioning. Plan RepTopia, the Fragile Forest biodome and lunch into that slot deliberately.

After 4pm the park cools and some animals stir again, but you only have until the 5pm last entry and the 6pm close.

For photographs, the orangutan boardwalk in early morning gives you soft light through canopy and animals at eye level. Wild Africa is harsh at midday and good in the last two hours. Avoid the middle of the day for anything you want to keep.

The insider entry

Everyone arrives on the M2 bus and walks straight into the main plaza queue. If you have pre-booked and hold a mobile ticket, look for the mobile-entry lanes rather than joining the redemption counter line — the redemption counters exist for paper vouchers and physical passes, and they are where the delay is.

If you are visiting two parks on one pass, do the entry at Singapore Zoo, not at River Wonders. The zoo plaza has more turnstiles and clears faster, and the two entrances are a five-minute walk apart on the same site.

How to save

The bus is S$2.50. A taxi from the city to Mandai runs many times that. The Khatib Bus M2 leaves from Khatib MRT (NS14) every 15 minutes from 8.30am to midnight and takes about 20 minutes. Same fare for adults and children.

Do the pass arithmetic honestly. A multi-park pass beats singles from the second park onwards. But four parks in one day at Mandai is a nine-hour day in the tropics, and most people who buy the four-park tier use two or three. Buy the tier you will actually walk.

Pair the zoo with Night Safari, not with a city attraction. The zoo closes at 6pm; Night Safari opens at 6pm next door. That handover is the only reason a two-park day at Mandai is not exhausting.

Bring water and a refillable bottle. Refill stations are provided throughout the park. In-park drinks are priced as you would expect.

Singapore residents get a separate discounted rate through Mandai directly, which resellers do not carry. Bring your NRIC and buy at the counter.

How to get there

Public transport, the cheap way: North-South Line to Khatib (NS14), then the Mandai Khatib Bus (M2) from the bus bay outside the station. Daily 8.30am to midnight, every 15 minutes (every 20 after 11pm), S$2.50 for adults and children, about 20 minutes.

Public transport, the other way: several public bus services connect to Mandai Lake Road from MRT stations including Ang Mo Kio and Choa Chu Kang. Standard fares apply and journeys are longer.

Driving takes about 30 minutes from the city. Park at the Mandai Wildlife EAST carpark for the zoo, River Wonders and Night Safari; maximum vehicle height 2.1 metres.

The address for navigation is 80 Mandai Lake Road, Singapore 729826 — the EAST site. Bird Paradise is at 20 Mandai Lake Road, on the WEST site, and it is not a walk between them.

What is nearby

Everything worth pairing is on the same site. River Wonders shares a wall with the zoo and holds the giant pandas. Night Safari opens at 6pm on the adjacent plot. Rainforest Wild ASIA and Exploria are the two newest parks on Mandai East.

Bird Paradise is on the WEST site, 20 Mandai Lake Road — close by road, not by foot. If it is on your list, put it on a different day or plan the shuttle into your timing.
