Night Safari tickets: the 7pm rule and how to avoid the tram queue

Night Safari is not a zoo with the lights turned off. It is an open-air park built specifically for animals that are awake after dark, opened on 26 May 1994 at a cost of S$63 million, across 35 hectares of secondary rainforest beside Upper Seletar Reservoir. It was the first of its kind anywhere.

The lighting is the trick. A London-based designer, Simon Corder, built a scheme that reads as moonlight — brighter than a real full moon by some orders of magnitude, but dim enough that the animals behave as though it is night, because for them it is. Nothing is caged. Cattle grids, moats disguised as streams and hot wires disguised as twigs do the containment work.

Over 900 animals live here across more than 100 species, roughly 41% of them threatened.

The 7pm rule

This is the single most useful thing on this page. The park opens at 6pm. The tram and the walking trails start at 7pm.

A 6pm entry gets you the entrance plaza, the restaurants and the Creatures of the Night show area. It does not get you into the park proper. Visitors who book the earliest slot expecting a head start spend an hour eating dinner they did not plan to eat.

Book an entry slot around 7pm to 7.30pm. You arrive as the park opens for real.

Tram first or trails first

The Safari Adventure Tram runs a commentated loop of roughly 40 minutes through most of the park's larger enclosures — Indian rhinoceros, Asiatic lion, Asian elephant, African buffalo, sloth bear, striped hyena. There is no walking equivalent to that route, which is why the tram version of the ticket is the one to buy.

The four walking trails — Fishing Cat, Leopard, East Lodge and Wallaby — cover the smaller and more elusive animals and take about 90 minutes in total.

The order depends on when you arrive.

• Arrive at 7pm: tram first. The queue is short in the first 30 minutes and grows all evening.
• Arrive after 8.30pm: trails first. The tram queue is at its worst between 8.30 and 9.30pm and collapses after 10.30pm. Walk while others queue, ride at the end.

Timing is everything

The quietest hours are after 10pm. Most family groups leave by then, the tram queue is gone and the trails are close to empty. Last entry is 11.15pm and the park closes at midnight, so a 9.30pm entry is a legitimate strategy for a short, uncrowded visit — provided you have transport home.

The busiest hours are 7.30pm to 9.30pm, every night, and considerably worse at weekends and during Singapore school holidays.

Weather matters more than at a daytime park. Rain empties the trails and slows the tram, and there is very little shelter once you are inside. If a storm is forecast, go late rather than early — Singapore's evening rain usually clears within an hour.

The insider entry

Two practical ones, both real.

The Creatures of the Night show has fixed times posted at the entrance and seats a large audience. During a showing, the tram queue measurably shortens. If you are inside and the queue looks bad, check the show board — you may be twenty minutes from a much shorter wait.

Second, the East Lodge Trail is consistently the least walked of the four, because it branches off at a point most visitors have already turned away from. It is also where the fishing cats and the Malayan tigers are.

How to save

Combine with a daytime Mandai park rather than a city attraction. Singapore Zoo closes at 6pm; Night Safari opens at 6pm on the adjacent plot. One trip to Mandai, two parks, one bus fare each way. That geography is the entire argument for a multi-park pass here.

Do not pay for a tram-free ticket to save a few dollars. The tram covers enclosures the trails cannot reach. Without it you are paying most of the price for part of the park.

Eat before you go, or eat at the plaza deliberately. There is no food inside the trail network. The plaza restaurants are the only option and they are priced for a captive audience.

Bring insect repellent. It is secondary rainforest at night. This costs nothing and saves the evening.

How to get there

Khatib MRT (NS14) on the North-South Line, then the Mandai Khatib Bus (M2) from outside the station. S$2.50 for adults and children, about 20 minutes, running daily from 8.30am to midnight — every 15 minutes until 11pm, then every 20.

Getting back is the part people forget. The M2 runs to midnight, and Singapore's last trains leave most stations around midnight. If you stay until the 12am close, plan on a taxi or ride-hail, and expect surge pricing at Mandai at that hour. Leaving by 11pm keeps you on public transport.

Driving takes about 30 minutes from the city. Park at Mandai Wildlife EAST.

What is nearby

Singapore Zoo and River Wonders share the Mandai East site and close at 6pm — exactly when Night Safari opens. Rainforest Wild ASIA and Exploria are also on the East site. Bird Paradise is on the WEST site at 20 Mandai Lake Road, a separate address.

There is nothing else in the area. Mandai is deep in Singapore's central catchment forest, which is why the park works, and why the journey home needs planning.
