Marina Bay Sands SkyPark tickets: peak, non-peak and the pool question

Marina Bay Sands opened in 2010 at a cost of around S$8 billion, and the three towers with a boat balanced across the top became Singapore's shorthand image within about a year. The SkyPark is that boat. It runs 340 metres across the roofline, and a section of it — Level 56, Tower 3 — is open to anyone with a ticket.

The pool, once and for all

The most common disappointment at Marina Bay Sands is a solvable one.

The infinity pool is on Level 57 and is for hotel guests only. It is not part of the SkyPark Observation Deck, it is not an upgrade you can buy, and there is no ticket, package or membership that admits a non-guest. Staff check room keys at the lift.

The Observation Deck is on Level 56. It is an open-air platform with the same view — the same height, the same direction, the same skyline — minus the water. That view is what the ticket buys, and it is a good one.

If swimming in that photograph matters to you, the only route is a room booking.

Peak and non-peak

Marina Bay Sands splits the day into two priced sessions, and the split is unusually meaningful.

The S$4 difference buys sunset and the lit skyline. Almost nobody who has been up in both sessions recommends the daytime one.

There is also a Sunset in the Sky package at S$118 for an adult, with priority access through a private entrance, reserved seating and champagne. It solves a real problem — the deck is genuinely crowded at sunset — at a price only you can judge.

Timing is everything

Arrive at 6.45pm. Singapore sits almost on the equator, so sunset lands between about 6.55pm and 7.15pm year-round and twilight is short — roughly twenty-five minutes from sunset to full dark. Arriving at 6.45 gives you daylight, sunset and night in one visit. Arriving at 7.30 gives you night.

The busiest window is 6.30pm to 8pm, every day. If you want the deck quiet, go at 9pm — you lose the sunset and gain space at the rail.

The non-peak session is genuinely empty between 9.30am and 11am. If your interest is the view of Gardens by the Bay from above rather than the skyline at night, that is the slot, and it is S$4 cheaper.

For photographs, stand at the Gardens by the Bay end of the deck, not the CBD end. The CBD end faces a wall of towers; the Gardens end gives you the Supertrees, the domes and the strait, with depth in the frame. Bring a cloth — the rail glass is smeared by 7pm every night.

The insider entry

The deck entrance is via the Hotel Tower 3 driveway, not through The Shoppes and not through the casino. This is signposted badly and it is the single most common wrong turn on the site.

Coming from Bayfront MRT, walk through The Shoppes towards the hotel lobbies, exit at Tower 3 and look for the SkyPark lift lobby off the driveway. Coming from Gardens by the Bay, use the underground link into The Shoppes and do the same. Allow ten minutes more than you think from the MRT platform.

The box office closes at 9.15pm even though the deck runs to 10pm and last entry is 9.30pm. If you plan a late visit, buy online.

How to save

Take the non-peak session if the view, not the sunset, is the point. S$35 against S$39, and a far emptier deck.

The family package is real value. S$110 for two adults and two children against S$132 buying four separate non-peak tickets.

Watch Spectra for free instead. The nightly water and light show at the Event Plaza costs nothing, runs at ground level on the promenade, and is the better spectacle of the two. Plenty of visitors do Spectra and skip the deck entirely.

Do not buy the deck and a second observation deck on the same trip. The SkyPark, the Singapore Flyer and the Supertree Observatory all sell you Marina Bay from above. One is enough; the second is the same photograph from a different angle.

How to get there

Bayfront MRT (CE1 on the Circle Line, DT16 on the Downtown Line), then follow signs through The Shoppes to Hotel Tower 3. About eight minutes from the platform, all of it indoors and air-conditioned.

On foot: ten minutes from Gardens by the Bay through the underground link, fifteen minutes from the Merlion across the Helix Bridge, twenty minutes from the Singapore Flyer along the promenade.

Driving is possible but the Bayfront car parks are expensive and full on weekend evenings.

What is nearby

Gardens by the Bay is a ten-minute walk and pairs naturally — the deck looks down on it, and Garden Rhapsody runs at 7.45pm, which is exactly when you would be coming back down.

The ArtScience Museum is the lotus-shaped building at the water's edge on the same site, holding the permanent teamLab installation and rotating exhibitions. The Helix Bridge connects to the Marina Centre side and the Singapore Flyer is at the far end of that walk. Spectra runs nightly and free at the Event Plaza directly below the towers.
