Changi Experience Studio: a museum about the airport you are standing in

Changi Experience Studio sits on Level 4 of Jewel, and it is a museum about the building you are standing in.

That sounds like a joke and it is not. Changi handled roughly 70 million passengers in 2025 across more than 100 airlines. Moving that many people through a single site is a genuinely complicated piece of engineering and logistics, and the studio is about how it is done — baggage handling, air traffic, the terminal design decisions, the operational history.

If that interests you, it is two good hours. If it does not, the floors below are free.

What is inside

An interactive route rather than a gallery. The material is delivered through games, simulations and large-format installations rather than cases and labels — you fly things, sort things, run things.

Broadly it covers three areas: where Changi came from, including the airport's development and the terminals' architecture; how it runs now, which is the operational and logistical half and the most interesting part; and where it is going, which is the section that dates fastest.

Ninety minutes to two hours. Longer with children, who tend to loop back to whichever game they liked rather than progress.

With a family, most people buy Canopy Park, and that is usually the right call. With a long layover and no children, the Experience Studio is the one that fills the time properly.

With two hours total, buy nothing. The Rain Vortex is the world's tallest indoor waterfall, it runs a light and sound show after dark, and it costs nothing.

On a layover

Jewel is landside, which is what makes any of this possible in transit: you clear immigration, visit, and check back in.

• Under three hours — stay airside.
• Three to five hours — clear immigration, see the Rain Vortex, eat, go back. No ticket needed.
• Five hours or more — the Experience Studio fits comfortably, or take the MRT into the city.

Two things to check before you commit: Singapore's transit entry rules for your nationality, and your airline's re-check-in cut-off. Jewel also has early baggage check-in, which makes a longer stop considerably more pleasant.

What it is actually good at

The temptation with an attraction inside an airport is to assume it is filler. This one is better than that, and the reason is specific: it is about operations rather than nostalgia.

Most airport museums are about aviation history — old uniforms, model aircraft, a timeline of the jet age. The Changi studio spends most of its floor on how the current airport works: how baggage moves between terminals, how aircraft are sequenced, how a hub handles connections, what the terminal buildings are designed to do to passenger flow.

That is unusually interesting material, and it is well suited to the interactive format because those systems are genuinely game-shaped — sorting, routing, scheduling under constraint.

The weaker half is the future-facing section, which dates quickly and reads as promotional. The historical opening is competent but brief.

Who this lands for: anyone who finds infrastructure interesting, children from about seven who like games, and travellers with time to fill who would rather do something than shop. Who it does not: anyone hoping for aircraft, and anyone with under two hours.

Timing

Weekday afternoons are the quiet window. Weekends and Singapore school holidays fill Jewel generally, and Level 4 with it.

Evenings are the Rain Vortex's time, not the studio's. If you have one evening slot at Jewel, spend it downstairs watching the light and sound show, which is free.

Book online rather than at the counter — the online rate is normally lower, and this is one of the few savings available here.

How to save

Ask whether you want it at all. The Rain Vortex, the Forest Valley and 300 shops and restaurants cost nothing, and for most travellers with a few hours that is the correct Jewel visit.

Buy Canopy Park instead if you have children. S$8 at the gate, S$6 for Singapore residents, S$5.40 for CapitaStar and Changi Rewards members at the concierge counters — a fraction of the studio's price, and slides.

Check the Jewel attraction pass if you are doing more than one paid thing on Level 4 and 5, and confirm the Experience Studio is on the current inclusion list.

Book online. The counter rate is higher.

Eat at Jewel, not airside. Mall pricing rather than terminal pricing, and a far wider choice.

How to get there

Changi Airport MRT (CG2), with direct walkway and lift access from Terminals 2 and 3. From the city allow about 45 minutes with one change at Tanah Merah.

From Terminal 1 you walk directly into Jewel — it is built into the terminal. Terminals 2 and 3 connect by covered link bridges.

The studio is on Level 4. The address is 78 Airport Boulevard, Singapore 819666.

What is nearby

The rest of Jewel — the Rain Vortex, the Forest Valley, Canopy Park on Level 5 and 300 outlets. All of it except Canopy Park and the Level 5 attractions is free.

Airside, the Changi lounges are the other paid way to spend a layover. Outside the airport, Changi Beach Park is a short bus ride and free, and Wild Wild Wet at Pasir Ris is about 15 minutes away by MRT — the only attraction on this site genuinely close to Changi.
