Madame Tussauds Singapore tickets: what the S$29 actually covers

Madame Tussauds Singapore opened on 25 October 2014 at Imbiah Lookout, the seventh Asian branch of the chain. If you have been to one in London or Hong Kong you know what a wax museum is, and that knowledge will slightly mislead you here.

The Singapore branch bundles several attractions into one ticket, and that bundling is the whole basis of the price.

What the ticket actually covers

The standard admission is not just the figures.

• The wax figure zones — world leaders, sport, music, film. Lee Kuan Yew, Xi Jinping, Narendra Modi, Cristiano Ronaldo, Taylor Swift, the Singapore Girl. Regional figures sit alongside the global ones, which is more interesting than the international-only line-ups elsewhere.
• Images of Singapore — a historical walk-through covering the country's development, with a guided tour version. This is the part with genuine local content, and it is the reason the Singapore branch justifies a ticket that a wax museum alone would not.
• The Spirit of Singapore boat ride — an indoor boat ride through a stylised version of the country. Short, and the thing small children remember.
• Jumanji: Safari Tours 4D Expedition — the newest addition, included in the standard ticket.

A higher tier adds VR racing in a full-sized car simulator.

Children under 3 enter free, and the operator allows free rescheduling if plans change — an unusually forgiving policy for a Sentosa attraction, and useful in a climate where afternoon plans collapse regularly.

Booking online is the discount. The gap between the online and walk-up rates is several dollars, and there is no scenario in which turning up at the counter is the better move.

Singapore citizens should check SG Culture Pass eligibility, which changes the price entirely.

Where it fits in a Sentosa day

This is the important part, and it is not about the attraction itself.

Madame Tussauds is a ninety-minute indoor attraction on an island where the headline attractions take a full day each. It cannot be the reason you cross to Sentosa, and it does not compete with Universal Studios or the Oceanarium.

What it is good at is being one of the short attractions at Imbiah Lookout, the cluster in the island's hilly middle. Alongside SkyHelix Sentosa, Sentosa 4D AdventureLand and the Skyline Luge start, it makes an afternoon that does not require committing a whole day.

The other case is rain. Sentosa's wet-weather options are the Oceanarium, the Resorts World malls, and this. When a downpour lands at 2pm and the beach plan dies, an indoor ninety minutes at Imbiah is a reasonable recovery.

Timing is everything

Late morning or mid-afternoon on a weekday is the quiet window. Weekend afternoons and the December and late-May school holidays fill the figure zones, and a full room ruins the only real activity — getting a photograph without a stranger in it.

Rainy afternoons are the worst possible time and also the time most people arrive, for exactly the reason above. If your day is wet, get here early rather than at 3pm with everyone else.

Pair it with an outdoor attraction, not another indoor one. The Imbiah cluster works because you alternate: luge in the open, Tussauds in the air conditioning, SkyHelix outside again.

For photographs, the figure zones are lit for cameras and the lighting is the same all day. The variable is purely how many other people are in the room — which takes you back to going on a weekday.

How to save

Book online. From S$29 against a S$34 usual price is the largest single saving available here, and it takes a minute.

Check the family bundle against four individual online tickets. It usually wins, but not always, and under-threes are free either way.

Do not buy the VR tier on a first visit. The S$10 gap buys a car simulator, not more of the attraction. If you want a driving simulator, buy one; if you want a wax museum, do not.

Combine at Imbiah rather than travelling for it. Getting to Sentosa costs time and sometimes money; make the trip earn its keep with two or three things at the same lookout.

Use the free Sentosa Boardwalk to reach the island — 15 minutes on foot from VivoCity, sheltered, free — then the monorail or a walk uphill to Imbiah.

Singapore citizens: check SG Culture Pass. It is the one route to a materially different price.

How to get there

Take the MRT to HarbourFront (NE1/CC29), then:

• Sentosa Express monorail from VivoCity Level 3 to Imbiah Station, then a short walk up to the lookout.
• Singapore Cable Car Sentosa Line to Imbiah Lookout, which lands you closest of all.
• Sentosa Boardwalk on foot from VivoCity — free — then the monorail or a fifteen-minute uphill walk.

What is nearby

Imbiah Lookout is the point of this visit. SkyHelix Sentosa is two minutes away and is the highest open-air viewpoint on the island. Sentosa 4D AdventureLand is in the same cluster. The Skyline Luge starts here and runs down to the beach.

Downhill, Beach Station has Wings of Time at 7.40pm and 8.40pm and Siloso Beach, which is free. Two monorail stops the other way, Universal Studios Singapore and the Singapore Oceanarium are at Resorts World.
