The zoo is bigger and busier. Bird Paradise is newer, quieter and better designed for walking.
Check pricesBird Paradise opened on 8 May 2023 and is the direct replacement for Jurong Bird Park, which closed on 3 January 2023 after more than fifty years on the other side of the island. The collection moved to Mandai, into a 17-hectare park designed by RSP Architects with roughly double the walk-in aviary space of the old site.
More than 3,500 birds from over 400 species live here. It is the largest bird park in Asia, and — unusually for Mandai — it is rarely crowded.
The address problem
This is the practical thing to get right before anything else.
Bird Paradise is at 20 Mandai Lake Road, Singapore 729825. That is the Mandai Wildlife WEST site.
Singapore Zoo, River Wonders and Night Safari are at 80 Mandai Lake Road, Singapore 729826 — the EAST site.
The two are close by road and are not a walk. Visitors who buy a four-park pass and assume they can stroll between all of them lose an hour discovering otherwise. If you are combining Bird Paradise with an EAST-site park, plan shuttle or bus time into the day, or better, split them across two days.
Bird Paradise also shares the WEST site with Rainforest Wild Adventure WEST, which does pair naturally with it.
The eight aviaries
The park is organised around eight large walk-through aviaries, each built as a biome you enter rather than an enclosure you look into. Birds fly free around the paths.
That design decides how long a visit takes. Seventeen hectares sounds walkable in ninety minutes; in practice each aviary is a loop of its own, and three to four hours is realistic for all eight plus a show.
The aviaries cover African wetlands, Southeast Asian rainforest, Australian outback and South American habitats among others, with the vegetation and the water features built to match. Penguin and lory feeding points and the smaller themed habitats fill the gaps between them.
Timing is everything
Arrive at 9am. Birds are visibly more active in the first two hours, before the heat settles. The aviaries are largely uncovered — that is the point of them — which makes midday walking hot and the birds quiet.
Check the show timetable at the entrance before you start walking. The presentations at the Sky Amphitheatre and along the Mandai Boardwalk run at fixed times, and the aviaries can be walked in any order. Build the route around the shows, not the other way round.
The quietest of the Mandai parks. Bird Paradise takes far fewer visitors than the zoo, which means even a Saturday here is calmer than a Tuesday at Singapore Zoo. If crowds are what you are avoiding, this is the Mandai park to pick.
Rain is a real factor. Uncovered aviaries and open paths mean a downpour sends everyone to the same few sheltered points. Bring a poncho rather than an umbrella — you will be walking through vegetation.
For photographs, the walk-through design puts birds at close range in natural light, which is the reason photographers rate this over the old Jurong site. Early morning gives you side light through the aviary planting; midday gives you harsh overhead sun and birds sitting still in shade.
How to save
Do not buy a four-park pass for a single day. The WEST and EAST sites are separate, and a genuine four-park day at Mandai means shuttle transfers, nine hours in tropical heat and a rushed Night Safari at the end. Buy the tier matching the parks you will actually walk.
Two parks on one site beats two parks across sites. Bird Paradise plus Rainforest Wild Adventure WEST is a comfortable full day at one address. Bird Paradise plus the zoo is a day with a transfer in the middle.
The bus is S$2.50. Khatib MRT (NS14), then the Mandai Khatib Bus (M2). Same fare for adults and children, about 20 minutes, running from 8.30am to midnight.
Singapore residents get a separate discounted rate through Mandai directly, which resellers do not carry. Bring your NRIC.
Bring water and a refillable bottle. Refill stations are provided, and three to four hours of open aviary walking in Singapore's climate needs more water than you think.
How to get there
North-South Line to Khatib (NS14), then the Mandai Khatib Bus (M2) from the bus bay outside the station. Daily 8.30am to midnight, every 15 minutes, S$2.50 for adults and children, about 20 minutes.
By car it is roughly 30 minutes from the city. For Bird Paradise, drive into the tunnel at Mandai Wildlife WEST and park at the WEST carpark — maximum vehicle height 2.1 metres. Do not navigate to 80 Mandai Lake Road.

Rainforest Wild Adventure WEST shares the WEST site and is the natural second park for the same day.
Across on the EAST site at 80 Mandai Lake Road are Singapore Zoo, River Wonders, Night Safari, Exploria and Curiosity Cove — close by road, not on foot.
Beyond the reserve there is nothing. Mandai sits inside Singapore's central catchment forest, which is why the parks work and why the journey needs planning at both ends.

Frequently asked questions
Is Bird Paradise the same as Jurong Bird Park?
It is the replacement, not the same place. Jurong Bird Park closed on 3 January 2023 and its collection moved to Mandai, where Bird Paradise opened on 8 May 2023 with roughly double the walk-in aviary space. The Jurong site no longer operates, so any old address you find is wrong.

Are there bird shows?
Yes, at the Sky Amphitheatre and along the Mandai Boardwalk, to a daily timetable posted at the entrance. Check the times when you arrive and build the route around them — the aviaries can be walked in any order, the shows cannot be moved.
What is the best time to visit?
From the 9am opening. Birds are most active in the first two hours and in the cooler light before 11am, and the aviaries are largely uncovered, which makes the middle of the day hot walking.
Is it better than the zoo?
Different. Bird Paradise is newer, quieter, more walkable and better designed for photographs. Singapore Zoo has more variety and more for young children. If you have one day at Mandai and no strong preference, most first-time visitors get more from the zoo; repeat visitors usually prefer Bird Paradise.
